The Little Red School House

The 100th anniversary of the little red school house in district number 3 of the town of Potsdam was celebrated recently with a reunion of 61 former teachers, pupils with their wives, husbands and children on the schoolhouse lawn.

The school has been in continual operation for the past century and is located on the back Norwood road toward Yaleville. Mrs. Leslie Haggett of Norwood, a former pupil of the school, was responsible for the reunion and sent out a total of 125 invitations to former pupils and teachers.

Honored guests at the reunion were Edward E. Wright, president of the State Bank of Norwood and Mrs. Wright.

A picnic was held in the shade of the old maple trees surrounding the grounds and the group spent the time reminiscing over their school days, while others played ball and horseshoes.

Former teachers of the school who were present were Mrs. Mattie Sullivan of Colton, Mrs. Marion Gaines, Madrid; Mrs. Rowena Murray and Mrs. Jeanette Patraw, both of Norwood.

Former pupils who attended the country school who were present were Margaret Colbert Wilkins, Knapps Station; Goldie Narrow Letkawski, Gouverneur; Lucy Boran McMillen, Finch, Canada; Dorothy Gaffney, Canton; Archie Grant, Ogdensburg; Warren Frenette, Dannemora; William Narrow, Gouverneur; Ethel Austin Crouch, Plattsburg; Blanche Austin Nichols, Norwood; Norman Austin, Potsdam; Ed Frenette, Malone; James R. Flynn, Arthur Cutler, Freda Davey, Russell Colbert, Grace Barrigar, all of Norwood; Mrs. Della Stevenson, Finch, Canada; Mrs. C. B. Knapp, Knapps Station; Mrs. Blanche McIntosh, Madrid; accompanied by her mother. Mrs. Margaret Grant, 85, and a former resident of the neighborhood; Mrs. Alma Grant, Ogdensburg; Kenneth King, Caroline Colbert, Andrew Davey, John Cecil and Myrtle Davey, all of Norwood; Charles Frenette, Tupper Lake; Dan Grant, Syracuse; Dorothy Haggett LaViene, Ilion; Robert Haggett, Katherine Haggett, Doris Colbert and Russell Colbert, Jr.; all of Norwood.

An old-fashioned musical entertainment was presented by Kenneth King who played a large selection of old fashioned cylinder records on an old fashioned talking machine.
