1904--Horsethieves

From the May 17, 1904 Canton Commercial Advertiser:

A pair of crooks named Cota and Lamere are in St. Lawrence county jail awaiting the action of the grand jury, charged with the larceny of a horse at Norwood. On that day Reuben Davis of Norfolk drove to Norwood and put his horse in the farmers' sheds. When he returned for it he found that some one had stolen it. Several people of the village had seen two men driving the horse toward Madrid. A little investigation on the part of the officers traced the horse to Madrid and from there on to Morley where they traded the animal for another. They came to Canton and later deserted the horse and rig and walked to DeKalb Junction, and there boarded a train for Ogdensburg. About five o'clock Thursday the sheriff had made up his mind that his quarry was to be found in Ogdensburg and at once wired the police department of that city. Officers Beach and McDonnall went out and soon located and after a hot chase gathered in the pair. Sheriff Caldwell arrived there on the evening train and identified the men as the ones desired and brought them back to Canton the following day. When arrested they had but seventy five cents in money, which would indicate that they were either on a cheap trip or intended to do a little more thieving to enlarge their resources.

Cota was indicted six years ago for burglary and grand larceny.
