1902--Norwood In August
A severe hailstorm passed over Norwood Saturday afternoon, reaching east as far as Winthrop ..in an instant the hail began to fall thick and fast, filling the air full of the cold, white mistles. Hailstones the size of peas lay one to three inches deep in places. Charles Mott, hostler for Dr. T. A. Pease, was obliged to shovel the hailstones away from the barn door on the following morning before he could open it. As late as Monday morning, small heaps could be found in shady corners about buildings.
The Congregation society have voted to extend a call to Rev. Dr. H. C. Taylor, from Cleveland, Ohio, who preached in that church the last two Sundays. Dr. Taylor is a cousin of Mr. Will Fuller. He is to preach at Norwood Sunday mornings for $1,000 a year and a parsonage, and at Norfolk Sunday afternoons for $200.
The L. L. Frost Paper Co. made a run of nine tons seven hundred and fifty pounds of finished manila paper in 24 hours at their mill in Norwood last week Wednesday. They expect to be able to turn out ten tons in 24 hours before long. a very good showing for this mill. The paper that is being made now is what is called a water finish paper and is of excellent quality.
Norwood base ball team went to Brushton, Friday, and played a very close and interesting game with the team at that place, winning in the tenth inning by a score of 4 to 2.
The fall term of Norwood High School will open September 2nd, 1902, with C. A. Fetterly, A.M., as principal; L. Grace Huff, A.B., as preceptress; H. Louise Hale, as assistant, Mable U. Kingston, intermediate and an excellent corps of primary teachers. An addition is being built to the school building, including a large academic room and when completed the building will be among the best in the county.
Mr. H. S. VanOrnum was assisting in putting ice in a refrigerator car Sunday when the tongs which he was holding the ice with slipped off letting him fall into the hole in the car breaking one or two ribs in his left side. Dr. C. O. Somner is attending him.
